The Obamas reunite with the Bidens at the White House for their official portrait unveiling

Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama returned to the White House Wednesday, reuniting with President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden to unveil their official portraits and introduce the artists behind them. The ceremony returned to the White House after a 10-year hiatus.

For his portrait, the former president selected Robert McCurdy as the artist. McCurdy, an artist and photographer known for his hyperrealistic paintings of several well-known figures, including Toni Morrison, the Dalai Lama and Jeff Bezos. The portrait unveiled Wednesday of a photo-realistic image of Obama in a black suit with a grey tie against a stark white background, was painted from photographs that McCurdy took of Obama. Former President Obama said: “When future generations walk these halls and look up at these portraits, I hope they get a better and honest sense of who Michelle and I were and I hope they leave with a deeper understanding that if we could make it here, maybe they can too. They can do remarkable things too.”

For her portrait, the former first lady selected Sharon Sprung as the artist. Sprung also worked off photographs she took at the White House to paint Obama in a blue dress, seated on a sofa in the Red Room. The former first lady said the day was not about her or the images, but illustrating what is possible in America:  “And as much as some folks might want us to believe that that story has lost some of its shine, that division and discrimination and everything else might have dimmed its light, I still know, deep in my heart, that what we share as my husband continues to say is so much bigger than what we don’t. Our democracy is so much stronger than our differences.”

President Biden said of Obama: “There are a few people that I’ve ever known with more integrity, decency, and moral courage than Barack Obama. Mr. President, nothing could’ve prepared me better or more to become President of the United States than being by your side for eight years and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.”

American woman killed in shark attack while snorkeling on vacation in the Bahamas

Authorities have confirmed that an American woman was killed in a shark attack while snorkeling with her family in the Bahamas on Tuesday afternoon.  According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the 58-year-old woman — along with four members of her family from the Lake Erie area of Pennsylvania — were on a snorkeling tour in the waters northwest of Rose Island when the victim was attacked by a bull shark shortly before 3 p.m. local time. The victim and her family had arrived in the Bahamas on Tuesday morning via Royal Caribbean’s cruise ship Harmony of the Seas.

Family members and tour operators attempted to rescue the woman but were unsuccessful. The victim suffered serious injuries to the left side of her body and was transported by the tour boat to nearby Fort Montagu on the eastern shore of New Providence island, where she was pronounced dead by emergency medical responders.

Royal Caribbean confirmed in a statement that the woman was a guest on their seven-night cruise, which set sail from Port Canaveral, Florida on Sunday. According to the cruise line, the victim and her family were on an “independent shore excursion” in Nassau when attacked by a shark and succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital. The company said in a statement:  “Royal Caribbean is providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

The victim was identified by her employer as Caroline DiPlacido, project coordinator for the Office of Community and Government Relations at Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania. The university said in a statement: “Caroline was a powerful presence of kindness and friendship to colleagues, students, and the wider community and cherished many family ties to Gannon. The news is devastating, and she will be missed.” DiPlacido is survived by her husband and three children, according to the school statement.

American Frances Tiafoe defeated No. 9 seed Andrey Rublev in straight sets, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (0), 6-4, at Arthur Ashe on Wednesday afternoon to become the first American men’s player to reach the U.S. Open semifinals since Andy Roddick in 2006.  The 24-year-old Tiafoe also becomes the first Black man to reach the tournament’s semifinal round since Arthur Ashe in 1972.

Tiafoe, ranked 26th in world, came two days after he defeated 22-time major champion Rafael Nadal, becoming the first American born in 1988 or later to beat Nadal, Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer at a Slam. Said Tiafoe: “Had the biggest win of my life 24 hours ago, and coming out and getting another big win — Andrey’s a hell of a player — to back it up, that’s huge growth. Let’s enjoy this one. We’ve got two more [matches to win] guys. Tiafoe is seeking his first career Grand Slam. Prior to this year’s US Open, his deepest run at any Grand Slam was a trip to the quarterfinals of the 2019 Australian Open.

NY Jets to start QB Joe Flacco against Baltimore Ravens in Week 1 game

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Wednesday at a news conference that the team will start Joe Flacco at quarterback for their Week 1 season opener Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. Saleh also told reporters that the team’s top quarterback, Zach Wilson, will not play for at least the next three weeks as he recovers from the right knee injury sustained in an Aug. 12 preseason game. The second-year quarterback underwent surgery on his right knee days after the injury.

Wilson won’t return until at least Week 4, when the team faces the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 2 in Pittsburgh. Saleh said of Wilson: “We are going to make sure that both mind and body are 110% and make sure we do right with him. We feel like, talking to the doctors and everyone, that it’s going to be that Pittsburgh week.”

The 37-year-old Flacco completed 64.3% of his throws for 338 yards and three touchdowns in two appearances last season for the Jets. He completed 24 of 39 passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns in his lone start in 2021, a 24-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Nov. 21. Wilson completed 55.6% of his throws for 2,334 yards, nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 13 starts last season.

The Jets will host the Ravens in their season opener at 1 p.m. EDT Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The Ravens are 5.5-point favorites.

Ben Stiller and Sean Penn among those permanently banned from Russia in new round of sanctions

Actors Sean Penn and Ben Stiller have been officially and permanently banned from entering Russia, along with 23 other “members of the US Congress, high-ranking officials, representatives of the business and expert communities, as well as cultural figures.”

The personal sanctions were announced in a statement by Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in response to what it calls “the ever-expanding personal sanctions by the G. Biden Administration against Russian citizens.”  The sanctions also target Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Thea Kendler, as well as several other officials in the department of trade.

Penn had traveled to Ukraine to make a documentary for Vice as Russia was planning its invasion of the sovereign nation. In February, he issued the following statement: “Already a brutal mistake of lives taken and hearts broken, and if he doesn’t relent, I believe Mr. Putin will have made a most horrible mistake for all of humankind. President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people have risen as historic symbols of courage and principle. Ukraine is the tip of the spear for the democratic embrace of dreams. If we allow it to fight alone, our soul as America is lost.”

Stiller traveled to Ukraine in June as part of the UN Refugee Agency to meet people “who have been impacted by the war” and hear “how it’s changed their lives.”  Stiller said as part of a video message posted by the UN Refugee Agency that “war and violence are devastating people all over the world. Nobody chooses to flee their home. Seeking safety is a right, and it needs to be upheld for every person.”

Tiffany Haddish says she ‘deeply regrets’ comedy sketch that led to child sex abuse lawsuit

Tiffany Haddish posted a message on Instagram addressing the sexual misconduct allegations recently lodged against her and her fellow comedian Aries Spears.  The 42-year-old Haddish wrote: “I know people have a bunch of questions. I get it. I’m right there with you. Unfortunately, because there is an ongoing legal case, there’s very little that I can say right now. But, clearly, while this sketch was intended to be comedic, it wasn’t funny at all — and I deeply regret having agreed to act in it. I really look forward to being able to share a lot more about this situation as soon as I can.”

A lawsuit filed last week in Los Angeles accused Haddish and Spears of recruiting underage children for the purpose of filming sexually explicit comedy skits several years ago. The plaintiffs, who are now 14 and 22, said the experiences made them “physically, emotionally, and mentally uncomfortable.” They also said they felt they had been “groomed” when they were young and are now “traumatized for life.”

Haddish and Spears have denied all allegations through their attorneys.
