Lewis Capaldi announces new album and 2023 world tour

Lewis Capaldi shared on social media details of his long-awaited sophomore album titled ‘Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent,’ the follow-up to his 2019 debut, ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent.’ Capaldi also announced a headlining world tour in support of the album, with his North American leg launching next spring.  General ticket sales will begin Friday, October 21st at noon local time via Ticketmaster.

Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent’ is set release on May 19, 2023; Capaldi says of the project:  “I felt like I was sounding better because I was just chilled out in my own gaff. Also, a lot of this record was made with most of the same people who I worked with on the first one: TMS, Phil Plested, Nick Atkinson, and Edd Holloway. At least one of them is on almost every song.  I don’t want to create a new sound for myself, or reinvent myself. The songs I want to write are emotional songs, about love or loss.”

The official video for Capaldi’s latest hit song, “Forget Me” is directed by Louis Bhose and is a shot-for-shot remake of Wham’s 1983 hit “Club Tropicana.” Capaldi has also unveiled an acoustic version of the track, which you can listen to here.

Biden administration announces $2.8 billion in grants for electric vehicle battery manufacturing

President Biden is awarding $2.8 billion in Energy Department grants from his bipartisan infrastructure law to 20 manufacturing and processing companies in 12 states. The White House said that the Biden Administration is also launching the “American Battery Materials Initiative,” described as a new effort to mobilize government to help industry create a reliable and sustainable supply of critical minerals for EV’s and electric power. These efforts are part of a strategic Biden administration plan to make half of all new vehicles sold in the United States in 2030 electric.

The White House said in a statement: “Together, these actions will improve America’s energy independence, strengthen national security, support good-paying jobs across battery supply chains, and lower costs for working families. This market transformation is expected to increase demand for critical minerals such as lithium and graphite used in EV batteries. Today’s announcements demonstrate how the United States is poised to meet this challenge while growing our economy and creating high-quality union jobs in the battery supply chain.” Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm added: “Producing advanced batteries and components here at home will accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels to meet the strong demand for electric vehicles, creating more good-paying jobs across the country.”

The White House touted that President Biden’s economic agenda efforts have already “ignited a domestic manufacturing boom with companies announcing over $100 billion in EV, battery and EV charging investments here in the United States.” According to the White House, EV sales have tripled since Biden has been in office.

FDA advisory panel recommends revoking sale of preterm birth drug

On Wednesday, advisory panel to the Food and Drug Administration recommended taking Makena, a drug for preventing premature births, off the market due to doubts about the drug’s effectiveness. Makena was fast-tracked 11 years ago to cut the risk of preterm birth, a leading cause of infant mortality.

The 14-1 vote by the FDA’s Obstetrics, Reproductive and Urologic Drugs Advisory Committee was taken after a hearing to determine  whether the drug was effective, whether trial data support its approval and whether the drug should remain available on the market.  Peter Stein, the director of the FDA’s Office of New Drugs at the Center For Drug Evaluation and Research said in closing remarks at the hearing: “Hope is a reason to keep looking for options that are effective, whether we find them here or elsewhere … Hope is not a reason to take a drug that is not shown to be effective, or keep it on the market.”

A 2003 study cited by CovisPharma, the maker of Makena, showed Black newborns are more than twice as likely to die as White newborns when born before 37 weeks. Covis argued that pulling the drug from the market would hurt Black women. In a statement earlier this year about the drug, Covis Pharma said it wanted to work with the FDA to do more research on Makena.

Formally taking Makena off the market will be left to the FDA, which could make its decision within a few months. If FDA follows the advisory committee’s advice, it would be the first time in a decade that a fast-tracked drug would be pulled from the market.

Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa shares details regarding his concussion

On Wednesday, Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa spoke to the media for the first time since he sustained a concussion on Sept. 29. Tagovailoa shared more details about the night he sustained a concussion against the Cincinnati Bengals, saying that while he remembers up until the point when he was tackled, he lost consciousness after he took that hit from Bengals defensive tackle Josh Tupou and doesn’t remember being carted off the Paycor Stadium field in Cincinnati. The Miami quarterback was stretchered and carted off the field with head and neck injuries after he was sacked, and taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he was later discharged and flew back to Miami with the team. The quarterback said he did remember the ambulance trip and the hospital.

The 24-year-old Tagovailoa told reporters at the Baptist Health Training Complex in Miami Gardens, Fla that he is anxious to return to the field this weekend after a “stressful” hiatus that included a probe into the Miami Dolphins’ handling of the quarterback’s head injury and resulted in NFL rule changes. The probe also led to new concussion protocol language for similar situations, with players exhibiting those symptoms of imbalance now longer allowed to return to games.

Tagovailoa didn’t return to practice as a full-time participant until Friday, and officially cleared the concussion protocol Saturday. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said that the team plans to start Tagovailoa on Sunday’s Week 7 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tagovailoa said: “I’m just really excited that I can prepare and play this Sunday. I think everyone’s excited to go out there and compete against a really good Pittsburgh Steelers team.”

Tagovailoa, 24, led the Dolphins to a 3-0 start before he departed during the Sept. 29 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.  He will make his fifth start for the Dolphins at 8:20 p.m. EDT Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium.
